Upper Missouri River Basin
The Upper Missouri River Basin extends from its vast headwaters in the mountains of Montana and Wyoming, across those two states, the Dakotas, and Nebraska, to the confluence of the Missouri and Platte Rivers near Omaha. The Upper Missouri River Basin is above Lake Sakakawea. The upper and lower basins are separated by numerous dams and reservoirs from Fort Peck in Montana to Gavins Point in Yankton, South Dakota. The Upper Missouri Basin riverine areas above the reservoirs have natural habitat features (Gonazalez et al. 2023).
